Prevention of home accidents: How to save yourself?

Prevention of home accidents

There are many things that can be done for the prevention of home accidents. They are small changes that help you take care of yourself and your family to make your home a safe environment, both for children and adults.

We all have a certain risk of domestic accidents in our home. However, there are several things we can do to try to minimize them to the fullest.

Prevention of home accidents

Just as when you have a baby or small children at home you strive to adapt the environment to ensure their safety, you can also do it thinking of yourself or the rest of the people you live with, no matter how old they are.

So today I want to give you some guidelines so you can increase the security of your home against domestic accidents. You will see how easy it is to get it.

Check the electrical installation

In addition to complying with the regulations in force regarding safety, the electrical installation of your house must be in good condition. And for this, it is necessary that you review it every certain time, and that you make the improvements that are necessary in case it deteriorates.

Check the electrical

The security measures established by law go through having a general picture (which should not be manipulated), with the established and automatic switches and differentials and circuits. If you believe that your electrical installation does not comply with the requirements established by the regulations, the best thing you can do is contact a professional who reviews it.

And do the same if you have plugs in poor condition, that do not work properly, or make the leads jump. When you need to put a power strip, choose those that have surge protection. They are more secure.

Very careful with the gas installation

You already know that both the boiler and the installation have to pass the relevant mandatory reviews (every 5 years). Make sure that is so. Also, if you have insurance for your boiler, have it come to check it and clean it once a year (many insurance companies include this annual visit in the policy).

Keep in mind that the review and monitoring of the installation is the best measure we can take to avoid domestic accidents related to gas.

Also, never handle the gas installation on your own or the boiler. And, if you have vents in the kitchen or clothesline, do not obstruct them. It is important that they are clean and open.

Safe from slips and falls

If the material of the pavements of your house is very slippery, you can avoid falls by applying a non-slip treatment. It is a very simple and practical solution. You just have to give the floor a colorless varnish that forms an invisible film with a slightly rougher touch. Indicated for surfaces that are in contact with water (such as bathroom or kitchen flooring), this is a solution that must be renewed every so often.

In case you are going to change the floor of your house, choose a material that includes this slip-proof treatment.

Safety in the bathroom

It is one of the most “dangerous” spaces in the house. Or, to be more exact, a critical area in which it is easier to suffer domestic accidents. Therefore, it is advisable to monitor the possible risks to try to make them disappear.

Safety in the bathroom

You can start by replacing the bathtub with a shower tray, especially if you live with elderly people. In doing so, choose a non-slip material, much safer. You can also install a safety handle on the shower wall.

And if you do not have in mind to renew your bathroom, you can apply the anti slip treatment to your shower tray. How? Very easy! You just have to spread a specific liquid, let it act for 5 minutes (or the time recommended by the manufacturer) and rinse with water. In addition, you can apply it to any ceramic floor.

Beware of fire

Although the risk of a fire at home is not too high (especially if you have checked that the electrical installations are in good condition), there are some measures that can be taken to minimize it to the maximum.

One of them is to place smoke detectors on roofs. These are small devices with a long battery life that emit an acoustic alarm when they detect any sign of fire.

Another security measure that we can adopt is to apply a flame retardant treatment to textiles (curtains, upholstery, etc.), so as not to spread the flames in case of fire. There are companies that are responsible for doing so.

These security measures help you avoid domestic accidents and are appropriate for all households. Security must be a constant in our home since it is the best way to protect ourselves and our family.
